2018 COMC purchases: lucky 7 hockey

Welcome to the first post covering a COMC package I mostly put together during its Spring Cleaning promotion.  I'm still waiting on a second small package most of which comprises cards I neglected to get into the first so opening with these hockey pickups made plenty of sense to me.
Up first is goalie PC guy Shawn Hunwick, my only supercollection from the sport (for now, at least).  I was excited to score three newbies in the form of this fun little trifecta.  #1 is an insert, a Mirror Hot Box parallel (#33/99) from 2012-13 Certified.  This shiny version is my second parallel to go along with the base RC and a cyan plate.  After that is a subset that I'm sure is familiar to my hockey-collecting readers:  Upper Deck's Young Guns.  I believe these are typically short-printed and the better names definitely carry a premium.  It's the second-to-last "base" rookie I needed.

And last is hit #16 of the guy who wore his Michigan gear in Columbus:  a 2012-13 Panini Prime Holosilver quad jersey auto (#15/50).  Shawn has a crazy 15 cards--all hits--in this product and I have five including this beauty that comes with some pretty nice jersey pieces as a bonus to the signature.

This continued my slow march to complete Hunwick's collection with a new count of 30 of his 71 cards and 33 total.
Brendan Morrison and Marty Turco are two players I'll probably always group together in my mind because of the NCAA title they won together in Ann Arbor, so here's the pair in insert form.  In each case I only found one new card for now, but at least they're good ones!  Morrison appears on a 2002-03 Topps Chrome Refractor while Turco gets a parallel of his own, a 2010-11 Certified Mirror Red (#170/250).  The scan came out a bit blurry due to the card bowing a bit so you'll have to take my word for it that it's a good looker.  By the way, it's milestone time as Morrison's card makes 50 in his collection!
Last up is a fun pair of hits.  Lately I've been trying to make more of an effort to get more new guys into my Michigan Hockey hits collection, especially seeking out autographs of players I hadn't found yet.  That list was already fairly small but was lessened even more thanks to these two--or at least would have been if Doug hadn't beat me to it with a nice signature (and relic) of the first player, Tyler Motte, because he's awesome.  Since I had no idea that was coming I found that 2016-17 O-Pee-Chee Signatures card you see above thanks to a pleasing design and reasonable price.

Joining him is Jeff Norton, another guy you see quite frequently on this here blog thanks to Doug turning up his cards in repacks, making him mostly responsible for yet another of my collections!  The defenseman appears here from the 1994-95 version of the Be A Player Autographs set, a product known for its deep roster of inexpensive signatures of lesser known guys.  This card makes Norton the 54th player in my hockey collection.

I'll (try to) be back soon with lots more from COMC, especially when I have everything in-hand, at which point you'll see lots of great cards on both blogs!

2017 COMC purchases: basketball and hockey

Welcome to the first of what will likely be five posts in which I finally conclude a look at my 2017 purchases by covering everything I nabbed from COMC late last year.

Today's post covers both basketball and hockey since I didn't pick up much of either (as usual):
Darius Morris 2012-13 Immaculate Collection Printing Plates Yellow (1/1)
Nik Stauskas 2014-15 Spectra Global Icons Printing Plates Yellow (1/1)
Like I said, I really don't chase basketball very much, but how could I pass up this pair of plates for around $11 combined?  The top one is my second 1/1 of Morris, the former Laker who's now playing in China, and it represents my 12th hit of him overall, good enough to break the tie with fellow former Laker (among other teams) Cazzie Russell.

If two plates out of 12 hits seems pretty good, prepare to be impressed by Nik "Sauce Castillo" Stauskas.  The Canadian star (whose plate is definitely far yellower than Morris' above) appears on a 1/1 on four of his six hits in my basketball collection.  That's crazy!  What's just as cool is that I now have double-digit 1/1s in all four sports of my Michigan PCs, and a pretty sweet 97 overall--and this is only my first COMC post in this bunch so who knows what might happen to that number soon!
Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 Panini Prime Dual Jerseys dual jersey (with Dalton Prout) (#011/200)
Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 Panini Prime Prime Time Rookies Jersey Autographs jersey auto (#20/50)
These next two are the first additions to my Shawn Hunwick PC since last October--as I find myself saying too often, his cards can be hard to find at reasonable prices for whatever reason.  Both are from 2012-13 Panini Prime--part of the excellent Rookie Anthology Product--and that's no surprise since Hunwick appears on 15 cards under that title (not including 1/1s).  This pair doubles my count to four of those, and some toughies await including three numbered to five copies and one limited to just three.  I'll take 'em as I find 'em.

I didn't know a thing about Prout so I looked him up and found out that he lasted with Columbus far longer than Shawn did, though he's most recently been associated with New Jersey.  The card he shares with the former Michigan goalie is the only such issue I have in Hunwick's collection so far.

Meanwhile the auto/jersey is far more interesting by virtue of including a signature along with a huge jersey swatch.  Just another example of Panini doing it the right way, I guess!

I now lay claim to 27 of Hunwick's 71 non-1/1s, 30 overall, and 15 hits.
We'll end the day with one more goalie on a flat-out cool card, one you'd be forgiven for mistaking for a Pacific product.  This Marty Turco Hot Gloves insert actually hails from an Upper Deck/McDonald's partnership from 2006-07.  It's die-cut in the shape of a goalie's catcher, and the main characteristic differentiating it from a Pacific-produced card is that it doesn't feature manufactured "netting", or die-cutting in that area at all.  But that doesn't take away from its very cool design, one that's definitely worthy of my favorite goalie's PC.

Come back soon for more COMC goodies as we go on a four post football run!

2017 COMC purchases: Suite hockey cards

Today seems like a good enough day to split my COMC football pickup posts right down the middle and show off some hockey stuff instead.  Hooray, eh?

This time I picked up a trio of cards for my supercollection of mighty mite goaltender Shawn Hunwick, a super fun player to watch in college who appeared in three minutes of a 2011-12 season Blue Jackets game and still managed to show up on more than 70 hockey cards, not including 1/1s!  As a bonus, pretty much every card of him features some combination of his college equipment, which is hilarious since he played for Columbus.

Here's what I landed:
First up is this Gold Rush parallel of Shawn's 2012-13 Score rookie.  Frankly I prefer the 90s baseball versions of this insert as this one manages to go more of the recent Topps parallel route despite actually having borders.  Since I already owned the product's base card I'm just left chasing his Black Ice parallel.

This pair of hits hails from the very cool multi-product 2012-13 Panini Rookie Anthology offering and represents both of Hunwick's non-1/1 entries in the Luxury Suite portion (which is actually listed as a Pacific brand, if you take a close look at the banner in the upper-left of each card).  On your left is his jersey/auto/RC (#35/99) from the Rookie Autographs group while you see the tougher Gold version (#19/25), including a "prime" jersey swatch on the right.  It's definitely a nice pair and I was glad to grab it for less than I was expecting.

Today's trio gives me 25 of Hunwick's 71 regular issues (and 28 cards overall), plus a new count of 13 hockey hits, making me wonder if I should have saved this post for Friday.

Stay tuned for a couple more COMC recap posts with 100% FOOTBAW action!

2016 trade package #13: SCFtDS is one of a kind!

Hmmm, three of my last trade packages came from Doug at Sports Cards From the Dollar Store.  Who could this latest one be from?  Oh, it's Doug!  And not only are the cards he sent even more high-end than usual, they're also part of the 40th package I've shown off on this here blog, which is just crazy!  If you don't believe me just check out all of my posts tagged with his name.

By the way, based on today's exchange rate I think that puts him at 1.31 of a kind Canadian.  Anyway, let's look at some cards!
Nik Stauskas 2014-15 Immaculate Collection Rookie Jumbo Tags Printing Plate Cyan (1/1)
Nik Stauskas/Glenn Robinson III/Mitch McGary 2014-15 Immaculate Collection Quad Materials Printing Plate Black (with Gary Harris) (1/1)
Here's a pair that easily rank as "Didn't see those coming!" candidates--well, sort of, as I was able to guess the second one based on some hints he passed along to me.  Incredibly, my first two hits of Nik Stauskas, a.k.a. Sauce Castillo, come courtesy of this pair of plates from 2014-15 Immaculate.  I'm pretty sure that's a first in my collecting life.  Anyway, I would have been happy enough just scoring a simple relic of the talented guard who was a Kings first-rounder in 2014, but that's not how Doug rolls.

And one Wolverine wasn't enough as he managed to dig up a plate with three recent Wolverines, throwing in GRIII and Mitch McGary, along with former Spartan Gary Harris because reasons?  That aside this second plate is extremely cool thanks to the college connection, and it gives me three hits of those other two guys.

One other interesting note:  just about anyone who's held a plate knows they're light, thin cards.  Not so with these versions from Immaculate, which are likely as thick as the relic versions, if not the others in the product, likely to prevent pack-searching.  The extra heft makes these already interesting cards even cooler.

We're not nearly done here, though--I mean, we haven't even talked hockey yet!
Shawn Hunwick 2013-2014 National Treasures 2012-13 Panini Prime Printing Plates Yellow (1/1)
The four-player plate was what I considered the most interesting card of the package, but this is the one I was most excited about since I supercollect Hunwick.  While I don't have as much luck tracking his stuff down as I'd like, I've built up a decent collection, and Doug was nice enough to send me what's now my hockey collection-leading third 1/1 of the former netminder.

This one proved to be a bit tougher than usual to identify because it's not listed in Beckett's catalog, plus it was actually inserted into a 2013-14 product, National Treasures, despite being a plate for a 2012-13 Panini Prime card.  Glad I've got that all sorted out!
John Madden 2001-02 Parkhurst 2002 Chicago Sportsfest 1-of-1 (1/1)
Brendan Morrison 2002-03 Parkhurst 2003 Chicago Sportsfest 1-of-1 (1/1)
And to finish up our five-of-a-kind/one-of-a-kind post, here's a couple more 1/1s, stamped convention card-style.  Also it doesn't hurt that a couple of my favorite former icers, John Madden and Brendan Morrison, are the subjects.  If you've been collecting for a bit, especially recently, you've likely seen this type of oddball pop up from time to time.  While I don't know much about SportsFest and can't easily back up the authenticity of their "one-of-oneness" these cards are a fun, cheap way to add that type of hit to your collection.  And you definitely can't go wrong with an iconic hockey name like Parkhurst.

My third hit of Madden ends up being my second 1/1 of him, and the other also came from Doug!  Morrison joins in the milestone fun with his 25th hit, which is still eight behind leader Marty Turco, but I'm happy to land my first 1/1 of him.

And that, folks, is how you send someone not one or two but five 1/1s of someone's favorite team.  Incredible, generous, amazing stuff, Doug--thank you!  I'm reloaded and ready to fire back as soon as you give me the green light that your post office is no longer trying to out-lazy their American counterparts--a war they could never hope to win, eh?

2016 COMC purchases: Hunwick and another hockey Mike

It's time to show off more COMC pickups.  Why am I posting hockey cards today, in the middle of August?  Because I have just two so it'll be quick and easy to scan and post them.
Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 O-Pee-Chee Retro
It's been a little bit but I now have my 22nd of Hunwick's 71-card run thanks to this Retro parallel from 2012-13 OPC.  Here's his base rookie for comparison:
The Retro version is naturally plainer, but while that makes it a bit more boring I do like being able to see his pads in the shot, whereas the base version covers up a ton of the photo in a way that immediately brings Idiocracy to mind:
Anyway, as always it's fun to see Hunwick in his full getup, which is completely Michigan-centric except for his jersey.

Hopefully I can start making faster progress on his PC, but for now his prices just don't make enough sense to me.
Mike Van Ryn 2006-07 Be A Player Signatures auto
Today's other card introduces yet another Michigan Hockey Mike to my collection!  After adding Mike Brown recently I noticed that I somehow hadn't tracked down a hit of defenseman Mike Van Ryn, a two-year Wolverine who won a title with the '97-'98 squad and returned for one more year.  Having been drafted by New Jersey at #26 overall in 1998, he then headed to the Devils' system before winning an arbitration ruling that made him a free agent, allowing him to sign with St. Louis.  He ended up playing three seasons with the Blues, four more with Florida, and his final campaign in Toronto.  Apparently he's now the head coach for Doug's Kitchener Rangers, which is very cool.

Considering how well it represents underappreciated guys who would otherwise likely be hitless, I'm not remotely surprised that Be a Player is the product that came through with this very nice Van Ryn signature.  In fact, more than 30 of my Michigan Hockey hits hail from that fantastic product.  Speaking of that collection, Van Ryn is the 45th member, not to mention the sixth Mike!

That's it for hockey this time, and I don't anticipate posting any more cards from that sport for a bit unless I get another trade package from Doug, so stay tuned for a bit of baseball and plenty of football.

2016 trade package #4: Sit down before opening!

Welcome, TMV readers who actually wandered over here today because I pumped up the awesomeness of the contents of my February trade package from Doug at SCFtDS!  This will be the 36th time I've shown off cards from him on this here blog, so I don't think I need to reiterate how considerate and generous of a trader Doug is--wait, I just did--so let's get down to the loot!:
Denard Robinson 2013 Topps Museum Collection RC
This higher-end Shoelace RC is the "worst" card I'll be showing off today, so set your expectations accordingly.  I'll give it a grade of "not bad for Topps" while rejoicing over another card getting knocked off for my football RC project.  I haven't posted everything I landed of him from last year yet but I now own 22 of Denard's 27 rookies from 2013.  Not bad!
Jon Merrill 2013-14 Totally Certified Rookie Autograph Jerseys jersey auto
The NHL is in full swing with the playoffs looming, so let's get down to some hockey content.  Kicking things off alphabetically is my fifth hit of Devils D-man Jonny Merrill, a guy who actually just celebrated his 24th birthday last month.  This shiny Panini auto/jersey is my second such card of him I own, and the other three include signatures as well.
Brendan Morrison 2007-08 Artifacts Frozen Artifacts Silver jersey (#060/100)
Next up is a solid jersey swatch of blog favorite and NCAA champ Brendan Morrison.  As a Silver parallel this one is numbered to 100, and Morrison had exactly 60 penalty minutes the year before this card was made, so that's an eBay 1/1, y'all.  Brendan's 24 hits in the hockey collection trail only Marty Turco's 31.

There was one last hockey hit in the package (one of the aforementioned "doozy" cards), and I want to give it the proper introduction.  Here's how it came packaged:
*turns the thing over*
*tries to sit down, realizes he's already sitting down, continues to sit, undoes stickiest tape known to man, gets tired, takes a nap...*
Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 Panini Prime Prime Time Rookies Jerseys Patch patch (#08/10)
WOW.

*looks at it again*

Still WOW.  That is a damn fine patch of hockey PC guy Shawn Hunwick.  What I want to know is how Doug managed to undersell this as an "insanely great patch" when it's obvious that it's more the speed of "super sick mojo patchtastic extreeeemze WOW."  See that you can be more accurate next time, my friend.

This is simply a wonderful addition to my collection overall, plus it fills a big need from Hunwick's checklist, the 21st card of his 71 I've landed to-date, and also my 10th hit of the goaltender (milestone time!).  I wasn't looking forward to trying to land one of these suckers which are numbered to just 10, but with Friends like Doug, who needs money?

I think that patch alone was worth the price of admission, but I saved this card for last as it shows just how much effort he's willing to put into finding and acquiring cards to send your way:
Karl Kauffmann 2015 Leaf Perfect Game All-American Classic Game-Day Printing Plate Yellow (1/1)
A printing plate--pretty sweet, right?  I was certainly geeked, I mean that's my 48th 1/1 of any type, which is very exciting.  But who exactly is Karl Kauffmann?  I'll admit the name didn't exactly ring any bells for me, so off to Google I went...only to find out that the pitcher is a Michigan native who recently signed on to join the Wolverines baseball team this fall!  If I'm doing the math correctly, that probably means that Doug has been the quickest to help me add a new Michigan guy to my collection by doing so BEFORE HE EVEN MADE IT TO ANN ARBOR.  What a very cool piece to own as I can now watch Kauffmann's college career with even more interest.  Oh yeah, and KK just happens to be the 25th member of my baseball PC.

Thanks once again for finding new ways to go above and beyond, Doug!  I look forward to your reaction to the response I'll be sending your way this weekend.

9/5/2015 card show report: multi-sport athlete

Since I already gave a brief overview of my experience at last Saturday's Taylor Town Trade Center show on this evening's TMV post, I'll get right to the cards you came to see here!
Barry Larkin 2013 Panini America's Pastime Gold (#11/25)
This beautiful and rare Larkin came out of the same box as the stuff you saw on TMV.  I'm used to paying much less for inserts in general so the idea of throwing down $4 for this one gave me pause until I considered 1) I was already getting good deals on a lot of the other stuff and 2) Barry's stuff sells very well so there's no guarantee I could have found this cheaper very easily.  I love the style of uniform grabbed in the photo, and you can't even tell it's missing a logo, which is a very nice touch.  Welcome to the collection, Larkin card #315!
2007 TK Legacy Michigan Game Day Rivalry (#GR1943)
Here's the only card I got for myself from the small $5 purchase, which comprised a bunch of base and inserts.  I grab TK Legacy Michigan stuff I don't have whenever I can, and this is the first of the Game Day Rivalry cards I've had to show off.  The set includes moments from Michigan's rivalries with OSU and Minnesota (for the Little Brown Jug).  Here's the text on the back that summarizes the game:
I hope to eventually grab more of these to add to my football inserts collection.
Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 Panini Rookie Anthology Rookie Treasures Level 2 Patch dual patch auto (#53/99)
And lastly, another card that set me back a measly $4 after all was said and done.  I believe most of you know that I PC Hunwick, and it didn't take me long to confirm that this was the other version of his Rookie Treasures card I needed.  A long time ago I grabbed the dual jersey version, #d to 699, and now I have the variation that's limited to 99 copies and includes two patches.  I ended up with an excellent three-color patch with double stitching on top and a solid two-color piece on the bottom.

I now own nine hits of the former walk-on goalie that nearly led Michigan to a title a few years ago, and I have 20 of his 71 issues to go with a pair of plates.  This collection has slowed down for me quite a bit as I search for reasonable prices, but when I've added anything of his recently, it's been pretty good like the card above.

Until next month, stay tuned for some eBay pickups, a slew of COMC cards, and other things that need to be scanned and posted!

2015 eBay purchases: March Michigan mishmash

March was a pretty good month for me on the Michigan PC front.  I made five purchases, each of a single card, but they were all useful for my various player collections.  One of those pickups was the final Ted Sizemore OPC card I needed and had Doug land for me, and now I'm back to show off the others I hadn't posted yet:
Rich Hill 2008 SP Authentic By the Letter 'U' letter patch auto (#14/50)
I paid a reasonable $8 for my fourth Hill manuletter auto from this series.  There are two nameplates, one spelling "H-I-L-L" and the other "C-U-B-S".  From the former I have just the "I" while I've made much more progress on the latter--besides this "U" I have the "C" and the "S".  I'll keep a sharp eye out for the remaining letters, especially that "B" as I'd love to finish off this small project.  This is just a great looking card for a Cubs player and I think UD nailed the design as usual.

Numbers-wise this is my 112th hit of Hill, and 294th in my Michigan Baseball PC.  For Rich's PC I'm about a card or two shy of 2/3 at 232/347, and I own 244 of his cards overall.

Michael O'Neill 2013 Bowman Sterling Prospect Autographs Orange Refractor auto (#13/75)
My favorite up-and-coming Yankees prospect is well-represented in last year's Bowman products, but I'm still working hard on his 2013 stuff as well.  I made another small step towards his Bowman Sterling rainbow with O'Neill's Orange Refractor auto, adding to the base, Refractor (/150), and Gold Refractor (/50) I own.  Six versions remain, some ridiculously scarce!

My 10th O'Neill hit is an autograph like the other nine, and this is my 295th unique baseball hit.  I can lay claim to 18/83 of his cards produced thus far, with a nice new chunk on the way thanks to Jeff.

Clayton Richard 2013 Topps Pink (#42/50)
Speaking of rainbows from Topps products, I'm also another step closer to Clayton Richard's from 2013 Topps/Mini.  Of his 17(!) different variations I own 12, so I'm getting there.  My overall progress for Clayton's collection has been pretty solid, too, as I stand at 110/150, or almost 75%.

Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 Certified Printing Plates Cyan (1/1)
And I believe I saved the best for last.  I scored this Hunwick plate on a combined purchase with another of Milan Hejduk that I sent to Doug.  These are a bit confusion because they don't show up in Beckett's OPG/checklist, and though they're for cards produced for 2012-13 Certified, the copyright date is 2014, and I believe these were actually inserted as hits into last year's National Treasures product.  Either way, it's another cool plate of Hunwick, and the second (after this one) I've managed to score.

Better yet, this plate hits multiple PCs.  It's my 21st overall card of the former goalie and 166th hockey hit.  I also shouldn't forget that it becomes the 34th plate/1-of-1 in my growing collection!

So yeah, not a bad month at all!  Speaking of pickups from a few weeks ago, I'll be showing off some Barry Larkins I nabbed for Justcommons pretty soon, plus much more!

2015 COMC purchases: a few for February

As I think I've said in a couple recent posts, I happily have lots of stuff to post, but today's a lazy Sunday for me and I don't feel like putting in the effort most of it deserves, so instead here's eight cards from my most recent COMC purchase earlier this month:
Drew Henson 2002 Hot Prospects bat (#0255/1000)
Henson is not one of my supercollections but I still like to pick up his stuff from time to time.  In this case I found a small semi-circle bat relic in the form of this base card from 2002 Fleer's Hot Prospects set.  I either got it for $1 or less than that so it was an easy decision to land my 14th hit of the former dual-sport star.  I now own 33 cards of Henson.
Barry Larkin 1995 Summit Samples
This package mostly focused on my brand new PCs (which you'll see very soon in upcoming posts), but I grabbed a few other guys too.  After I'd spent about 99.9% of my credit, I still had something like $0.45 left, so I looked to see what I could get of Larkin, and one of two or three choices was this cool sample card for Score's 1995 Summit set.  Summit was a slightly higher-end product Score put out in 1995 and 1996, and it featured cards that were thicker than average along with some gold foil.  Why not go a little oddball with my largest Michigan Baseball player collection?  This is card #247 for Larkin's collection.
Mike Matheny 2003 Topps Gold (#0369/2003)
Sticking with the NL Central I found this lovely 2003 Topps Gold parallel of Cards manager Mike Matheny for a very reasonable price.  I enjoy picking up his parallels and other inserts, of which he fortunately does have a few, but the ones I lack tend to be on the pricey side for some reason.  Not so for this issue, which features one of Topps' absolute best gold designs.  The gold isn't a solid, single-color hue but instead a pattern that brings to mind a pile of fine gold.  They were also still using the "real" and bold gold foil stamps for numbering back then, a practice I really wish Topps would return to.  Matheny's 53rd PC card glitters very nicely in-person.

Last up is a quintet of Shawn Hunwick needs, which I especially appreciate since I am supercollecting the mighty-mite goalie.  I found a seller who had a nice pile of Hunwicks and managed to get myself a pretty good discount.
Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 O-Pee-Chee Red
First up is this Red parallel of Shawn's 2012-13 OPC RC.  Those are currently the only two versions I own of Hunwick's six in the set, though at least only one is numbered, and even that's to a reasonable 100.  As often happens when I post more than one of his cards, get used to seeing this image a couple more times!
Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 Panini Rookie Anthology Elite Rookies Aspirations (#088/100) and Status (#025/100)
And you didn't even have to wait very long to see that photo again.  These cards are two of Shawn's parallels from the Elite Portion of Rookie Anthology, and anyone who's ever seen Elite sets before is already familiar with their names, Aspirations and Status.  The confusing part is that they're both numbered to 100, and the way it works is that the Status cards are the first 31 numbered while the Aspirations are the remaining 69; I thought we left this lunacy behind in the 90s when it was more commonplace but I guess not!  Anyway, you can see clear differences in how they're die-cut, and here's the base card for comparison.  Together those three form the whole of Shawn's Elite Run in Panini RA.
Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 Panini Rookie Anthology Prizm RC and Prizm Red (#50/50)
These final two cards also hail from Anthology.  The former is my 7th RC of the netminder, and a nice one at that!  Also I like that it features a different photo from the three above, that's definitely a plus.  We get a nice close-up of Shawn in his Michigan pads on Prizm's lovely chrome design.  Better yet, the latter features a beautiful red Refractor-like finish that's most definitely redder than the scan would indicate.  That version is numbered to 50, and I'm now halfway to his Prizm run with four cards, adding to the Father's Day Pulsar and autograph that I'd previously acquired.

I ended up deploying my favorite "milestones" tag as these new additions, along with a 1/1 I showed off a while back, put me up to 20 total cards of my second-favorite Michigan goalie.  I also stand at 19 of his 71 issues, good for a bit more than 25% of his run.

That's all for today, but I'll try to get back soon with the new additions I've been teasing.  Have a great Sunday, everybody!

2014 COMC and eBay purchases: Shawntilla the Hunwick

And we're back with more COMC pickups which hail from a package comprising purchases from September and October.

First up is former walk-on mighty-mite Shawn Hunwick, who led the Wolverines to an improbable NCAA championship game berth his senior year, then saw three minutes of NHL playing time with the Blue Jackets in a 2011-12 contest.  That fact didn't prevent him from appearing on a nice number of cards between 2012-2014, though!  Here's what I found of him this time:
Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 Certified RC (#513/999) and Mirror Red (#062/100)
This pair represents my first of Hunwick's entries from 2012-13 Certified.  There are six total, including the above base RC and Mirror Red, with the other four being Mirror parallels as well--Blue, Emerald, Gold, and Hot Box.  I like the shiny design, plus the fact that the parallels appear to improve on the base concept with their varying colors.
Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 Panini Rookie Anthology Prizm auto
Next up is this beautiful autograph from 2012-13 Prizm.  That product from Panini is responsible for some pretty cool designs, and I really like what they did here, in what's essentially a Refractor version of the base.  Also, Kudos to Shawn for adding his jersey number.  All told, he has eight cards to chase from this subset of that year's Rookie Anthology product, and I have two, including this Father's Day Pulsar insert.
Shawn Hunwick 2013-14 Panini Titanium Metallic Marks auto
Not as exciting but still very nice is this second signature of Hunwick in what proved to be his only 2013-14 card.  Maybe the product was a sticker dump?  Anyway, I now I have six Hunwick hits, five of which include autographs, so that's cool.  Also great is that every one of his cards features at least some of his college gear, showing off that block "M"!

While I'm at it, I can actually claim ownership of SEVEN Hunwick hits thanks to this related eBay purchase from last week:
Shawn Hunwick 2012-13 The Cup Printing Plates SP Game Used Yellow (1/1)
A bit more than $13 was enough to earn me my first Hunwick plate, and this one's a doozy--I mean it's THICK!  The plate is embedded in a card that I assume is as thick as the base cards and/or hits are, so that makes sense.  It ends up being kind of a cool way to display it, along the lines of what you get with the framed Topps products' mini plate designs.  Anyway, I'm thrilled to add my first 1/1 of this major player in my PC.

Today's pickups give me a new total of 15 Hunwicks, including the plate, and in terms of his PC I now stand at 14/71, meaning I'm about 20% there, so lots of work remains!

Stay tuned for two more posts which will show off my baseball and football pickups this time.
