Blowout/COMC/eBay Blowout 2012: Day 7: IT'S OVERRRRRR

Well, this is it:  the end of the 2012 blowout, and just in time for the end of the month.  I decided to just go ahead and show the remaining 14 cards all at once since I figured that would be a cool way to end a week's worth of posts.

These last 14 cards are the balance of the huge package I purchased from COMC which included a total of 31 new Wolverines PC hits for me.  The last couple posts featured a few of my all-time faves, Mike Hart, Chad Henne and Jake Long, but you'll see a somewhat more diverse group of players today.  And here they are:

Some thoughts on this last group of the blowout:

• After hovering around 400 towards the end of 2011, I now sit at 430, putting me well on my way toward having 500 by the end of the year.  EDIT:  make that 431--in sorting through everything, I found a Jake Long I hadn't yet scanned somehow.  He's up to 42 now, leading all sports.
• The three new Arringtons put me at 23 of him, all autographs.  I already had another version of the Score auto, but the SP auto is obviously today's winner--I mean, come on, look at the face he's making in the photo!
• Only one new Anthony Thomas, but MAN is that a nice signature!  He's now up to a solid 14 hits. 
• Only one new Braylon too, but it's an extremely nice triple patch, though it appears to be from a Browns jersey despite his appearing as a Jet on the card.  Make it 36 total for the #3 subject in the collection.
• The pair of Avants were among my favorites this time.  The possession receiver is now up to 23 in my possession.
• Just one new Leon Hall, but I do have its Red counterpart.  Hall is just one card shy of the 20-card mark.
• Two new Manninghams, and both feature autographs.  The SAGE is my favorite because it's a great shot of him playing for us, plus the colors just work better than the darker, harder-to-see SPx, which is nice in its own right.  That's 26 cards of Super Mario as he prepares to be frustratingly ignored by Eli Manning's stupid face in the Super Bowl.
• Marlin Jackson sure has a nice signature, doesn't he?  Unfortunately, this was from a year when SAGE didn't use a sticker that was less obtrusive and it really makes it hard to see the writing on it.  The injury-plagued Jackson finally hits double digits with his 9th auto.
• A pair of Shawn Crables in Michigan unis would be good enough, but I can't say enough good things about the outstanding full-bleed photo on the UD card--it's extremely pleasing to look at, and though the autograph and its player aren't top-notch, it's easily one of my favorites of the whole package--bring back full bleed!  Make it six of Crable, by the way, all autographed.
• Finally, I don't think I've ever seen a Breaston autograph this legible.  Seriously, look at the other ones I have!  Everything else is a variation on something to the tune of "SB," so despite being a SAGE card, this one has more of a premium feel to it.  That or a counterfeit feel to it.  But I'll just assume it's real, and anyway, it's an awesome Michigan uni action shot--what a great snapshot of a high-stepping Breaston.  This is my seventh autograph of him and eighth hit overall.

Well, as usual I hope you enjoyed seeing a bunch of my pickups.  It was fun having obvious, easy-to-use fodder for posts, plus adding exciting stuff to my PC, of course.  I hope to have more to show off before long, but one of my goals for the new year was to show some more fiscal restraint, and I've actually done well with that considering I dropped good money on the purchases that made up this blowout.  In fact, this month I haven't purchased anything else besides what you saw here, especially retail stuff, despite multiple opportunities to do so.  I'm happy to say that I've channeled a lot of energy into trades and that's really paid off both from a PC standpoint as well as my satisfaction with the hobby.

Yep, we're still chugging along on the mega 2012 blowout.  Today is part two of the football portion of my most recent COMC haul, and it features two more of my favorite Wolverines:

Just a few thoughts here:  first, three more Hennes gives me a solid 36 Hennes, including 16 autographs.  The six new Longs tie him for Rich Hill for number one in any sport at 41; an amazing 25 of those are autographs.  As of this post, the PC stands at 416, though, spoiler alert, I've already updated the stats in the sidebar along with the Google Docs sheet so I can put everything away; you'll see the rest very soon.

In terms of the Hennes, I'd say the SAGE Gold auto was my favorite--the hand numbering alone was nice, but it's a nice shot of the Michigan legend along with some of his impressive numbers.  The SPx, like the Hart yesterday, was my least favorite, but it's still a solid Henne 'graph.

As for Mr. Long, I was actually most excited about getting another of his RPM cards (besides his autographed and "prime" versions) but I really do like the blue of the SAGE auto.  The Score Inscriptions make for a nice pair as well.  The Best Pose award goes to the Brady Hoke-esque Finest auto/RC.

I still have 14 cards left to post and will likely split those up into two last posts, but maybe not depending on how ambitious I'm feeling.  Though these two most recent ones have covered three of my favorite Michigan Men, I promise there's plenty of good stuff left over that some of you will find interesting.  And yes, Jeff, a few of them feature Michigan unis--we look out for our own here at TMM.  I'm hoping to finish these up soon because I have some excellent trade post content upcoming!

Blowout/COMC/eBay Blowout 2012: Day 5: HART ATTACK

Yep, went with the low-hanging fruit on the title.  So here we are, finally getting on with the football portion of my COMC package.  Part one will feature a single player, the one whom I picked up the most cards of this time:  Mike Hart.  You'll see eight great cards of one of the greatest Michigan RBs of all time, and if you were reading on Tuesday, you know what that means:  the 400th card has hit my Michigan PC!

I'm really excited to have hit that mark because about this time last year I had just hit the century mark.  That was fairly amazing too because before I started this blog I could have probably counted my Wolverines hits on two hands.  I'd like to send out a big thanks to every one of you who sent me something towards this awesome collection because, while many of them came from purchases, a ton also arrived to me from great traders like you who were nice enough to send them to me in return for my useless crap.  You guys are awesome, and this milestone is a testament to that.

Soooooo...on with the Hart attack!

2008 Absolute Memorabilia auto RC:  a thick auto/RC full of foily goodness and numbered 43/99.

2008 Bowman Chrome Green auto RC:  Like yesterday, in some ways the green is off-putting when you're talking about a Michigan player, but it works as a parallel for the '08 BowChros.

2008 Bowman Sterling Gold Refractor auto RC:  I've got a few Wolverines from this set now, and the Gold Refractors are definitely the coolest looking.  But even without that shiny gold goodness, these tend to feature some fun poses.  I like the action shot of Hart protecting the ball just like I'm amused by Jake Long's own version.  Very cool and #d a very limited 02/25.

2008 Finest auto RC:  It's kind of funny, I've had the XFractor version for quite a while but hadn't picked up this version until recently.  That trademark Finest chrominess plus Hart's sweet sig make for a nice auto/RC.

2008 SAGE Aspire auto:  Jeff's favorite #1.  I've said multiple times that while sticker autos aren't always desirable, I've always kind of liked SAGE's for some reason.  Of course, I've always liked SAGE because it tends to be cheaper and features college unis, at least up until a year or two ago.

2008 SAGE Autographs Red auto:  Jeff's favorite #2 from the same year but a slightly different set.  Doesn't Mike look pretty Barry Sanders-like here?

2008 SPx Super Scripts auto:  This is my least favorite of the bunch just because I think there's too much of one color or tone going on, but it's still a Mike Hart autograph and I like that much.

2008 Upper Deck Heroes Autographs Blue auto RC:  Jeff's favorite #3.  Personally I think UD could have chosen a much better blue, but that's my only nit to pick with this spiffy Heroes auto.  That's definitely one of a couple UD-produced sets I miss (with Masterpieces being the obvious #1) because, take a look at this card and try not to pine for Topps having to compete with something like that.  We've got another great shot of Hart making a cut with a determined look on his face, and that's an on-card signature, by the way.  Add to that this one's numbered 005/250 and you've got a winner.  This was a close second to the Bowman Sterling for my favorite card today.

So add eight Harts to the pile and you get 407 Wolverines in the PC, not to mention 24 different Harts, all autographs.  Take a look at every one of them here if you have the inclination.  And stay tuned for part two (out of a likely four) of the football portion of the COMC segment of the blowout.

Blowout/COMC/eBay Blowout 2012: Day 4: 399

Today's post will be a quick one, mainly because today was a busy day for me and I haven't had time to scan the rest of the COMC haul, plus this single card arrived today and I thought that was perfect timing.  So, straight from the Blowout forums for $10 (from a guy who had one bad review out of five, accused me of not having paid him despite proof to the contrary, then took forever to ship the card), here's the latest member of the blowout crew:

Braylon Edwards 2009 Playoff National Treasures Signature Patch auto:  As soon as I saw this manupatch/auto, I knew I had to have it, despite the confusion (I share with some of you people) of seeing a Michigan patch for a Michigan player wearing Spartan colors on a card featuring Spartan colors.

Approves.  Also, WHAT DO YOU MEAN, "YOU PEOPLE"?

Anyway, despite the untrustworthiness and general dumbassery of the seller, I was willing to risk $10 on getting this card and it looks like that has paid off for me.  This is my 35th Braylon card, briefly tying him for the football PC lead with Jake Long, at least until I eventually get to the COMC stuff.  It's also my eighth auto of the erstwhile 49er (and maybe future Lion or Patriot I hope I hope) and better yet, my 399th football PC hit.  Granted, I have a surprisingly large stack from COMC to deal with, but that's a fun place to stop for the day.  

And it's also fun to commemorate the moment with such a cool card.  This is sort of one of those like-it-or-hate-it manupatches, but of course I love stuff with Michigan's logo on it, and Bray-Bray's auto is a nice bonus.  Plus, it's #d to 25, which multiplies the awesomeness by at least a factor of 10.  It's also worth pointing out that it goes well with these cards of Chad Henne and Mike Hart, with the Henne being the better comparison since it also features a nice Michigan logo on it.

All that said, I really do promise to get the COMC lot up in two or (more likely) three pieces over the next few days because I'm certainly excited to show those off.  As nice as it is being able to milk this blowout for all its worth for subject matter, I really should try to get it done by the end of the month considering I received this stuff a while ago.  So, stay tuned for that, and in the meantime, feel free to drop some comments about this card, the rest of the blowout or anything else that you might like.  And now, I'd like to close with an image that goes well with Braylon's pose up there:  Brady Hoke doing what he does best:

Blowout/COMC/eBay Blowout 2012: Day 3: a bit of everything

Welcome back to the 2012 version of the blowout.  I had intended to get to this post yesterday, but despite being a day off for me, I got sidetracked by other stuff.  No so today!

Up first is the remaining card from day 1's Blowout forum lot that accidentally didn't get sent to me before:

Steve Hutchinson 2006 Topps All-Pro Relics jersey:  Beggars can't be choosers when it comes to offensive linemen hits, especially if the player involved isn't Jake Long (sweet!) or Joe Thomas, the best at their position.  Hutch was one of the greatest OL in Michigan history and has a great shot at the NFL Hall of Fame even if his career ends after this season due to mounting injuries and age.  I guess a simple white swatch commemorating an All-Pro selection is fitting for a guy who plays at an unsung position but excels at it more than most.  This is my 3rd Hutchinson and 398th football hit to this point.

Now then, onto the first part of the ridiculous COMC haul:  hockey and baseball.

Andrew Cogliano 2007-08 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Ultimate Signatures auto:  This is my 3rd overall hit of Cogs, and my second autograph.  The former first-rounder is having a reasonably effective year for the Ducks in his first season with them, fifth overall.  He appears to be a bit lazy when he signs his name, but added an easy-to-ready jersey number, which makes up for it a bit.

Brendan Morrison 2006-07 SPx Winning Materials dual jersey:  This is my second such relic of Morrison, one of the greatest to ever lace them up for the Wolverines.  I really like how I ended up with three colors here, all of them sharp, but definitely highlighted by the scarlet, or whatever you'd call that red swatch.  Because they're my two favorite Wolverines hockey players of all time, I'm putting more effort into finding gems of Morrison and the next subject. 

Marty Turco 2009-2010 Be a Player auto:  Turco is easily the greatest goalie Michigan fans ever got to see, winning two national titles and setting the college hockey's career wins record with 127.  This is a beautiful autograph of his, and the fact that it's a sticker hardly detracts from its attractiveness because it's not very obtrusive.  The card is colorful and really pops, and it's paired with a fairly nice signature, including Turco's number, always a plus.  Three of my four Turcos are autographs and I plan to bolster that number quite a bit when all is said and done.

Bill Freehan 2001 Topps Archives auto:  Hooray for more Freehan reprint autos!  This is one of those times Topps did that thing that annoys me where they take a multiplayer card and blow up one player's picture to make it the only one on the card.  I realize Freehan is the focus if that card at this point, but I'd rather see it in its original state.  Imagine how cool it would be if Topps redid the Molitor/Tram RC and had both guys sign it--or even all four!  Anyway, I'm certainly happy to have another beautiful Freehan signature, my fourth overall.

Zach Putnam 2008 Razor Letterman Dual-Color "A" patch auto

Zach Putnam 2008 Razor Letterman M patch auto:  These two, with the "A" #d 13/20, give me five total Razor Letterman patches of Putnam, the newest Colorado Rockie.  These are actually reasonably abundant, but rarely are the prices rooted in reality, especially when you go over to eBay and find asking prices starting around 2-3x book value without even taking into account that these get about 1/4 book value in the real world.  That said, these two were just fine price-wise, and I may start working on getting his name plate in one or more of the versions.  I'm 1/3 of the way to the base and /20 version, so those may actually be reasonably possible.  I don't see myself going after the 1/1s unless something crazy happens, though.  Either way, these are tons of fun to have.

Zach Putnam 2009 Bowman Chrome Prospects Gold Refractor auto:  Here's my favorite from today's group.  This bad boy, #d 18/50, give me four different cards from this rainbow.  Well, that and it just looks outstanding--gold improves the overall look and Putnam's sig looks excellent.  I may add these to the rainbow/PC projects soon as I have some leads on a few other versions.  For now, getting three new Putnam autographs in a day is worthy of celebration alone.

Today's cards give me 398 in football, 81 in baseball and 22 in hockey, along with my three basketball hits, for a grand total of 504 Michigan PC cards.  That's a fun milestone to hit, especially with the 400-card barrier soon to fall for football, as soon as I get around to scanning and posting them.  And yeah, I'm as shocked as you that Rich Hill wasn't involved today!

Blowout/COMC/eBay Blowout 2012: Day 2: King of the Hill

Well, I'm skipping over the Blowout package for today.  Why?  My eBay haul came in today and I'm even more excited about that.  You'll see why in a minute.

Raise your hand if you think my preference for collecting Rich Hill is a secret around here.  Yeah, that's what I thought.  So, I found myself doing my usual inspection of Hill's stuff on feeBay last week when I noticed a printing plate that looked interesting.  I decided to follow it since the price was certainly right, then proceeded to check out the seller's other stuff, which certainly makes it easier to justify buying from someone there.  To my great surprise, he had a ton of Hill card all ending within about an hour or two of each other.  To my even greater surprise, quite a few of them were plates!  In going back and forth with him about payment and shipping I learned that he used to collect Hill himself but decided to dump his collection recently, to my great benefit.

I threw the ones I liked the most on my watchlist, then the evening they were all going to end, I hunkered down and prepared to battle the snipers.  I missed out on the first one because I was too late in getting my bid confirmed on my tablet, so I sadly watched that one sell for a song. (meaning a song plus $0.50 would have won it for me)  More determined, I pounced on the others I wanted and won all four of them.  Then I saw one last card that was sitting on $0.99 with just minutes remaining.  To my amazement, I was the only bidder.  I then got the seller to combine shipping ($3 x 5 adds up pretty quickly) and less than $40 later, partially due to my eBay bucks, I came away with these absolute gems:

 

2006 Topps Magenta and Yellow Printing Plates:  Well, once I won the first one, I had to get the other, right?  I'm not the obsessed super-collector type, but if I happen to find the other pair of these for sale I'll go after them.  Otherwise, I'll be thrilled to have a nice pair of plates from the same set.

2006 Topps Triple Threads Gold dual jersey auto:  This was the $0.99 card I mentioned above, as you'd probably guess once you scan everything in the post because it's the only non-1-of-1.  Still, the fact that this was the "worst" card I picked up says a lot about the rest.  More importantly, you just don't pass up a steal like this, especially when you already have the Sepia version to pair it with.

2006 Ultimate Collection Printing Plates Magenta:  If there was one card I was going to come out of these auctions with, it was this one.  I had a bit of competition towards the end of the auctions, but most of the next-highest bids were still relatively modest.  That didn't matter to me in this case, though, for one reason:  I already have the black plate from the set.  That means I now have two of four Hill plates in two different sets!  That's pretty exciting to me.

2007 UD Masterpieces Strokes of Genius Windsor Green auto:  "Big deal," you say, "you already have the base version of this one, the one you got from Sam.  Why should I care?"  I'll tell you why, my hypothetical friend:  have a look at the back of that there card.  See that handwriting on there?  Yessir, that's a good old-fashioned hand-numbered 1/1.  Nobody else has one of these and nobody else will while I'm still alive.  What's funny is, while this was the most expensive card in terms of what I had to pay, I still only had to fork over $13.49 for a true 1/1 autograph!  I just think that's awesome, but just as important, I think the card itself is outstanding since Masterpiece cards are great 110% of the time and the green border really adds something nice.  Still, my favorite feature is probably the Michigan/Cubs blue hand numbering on the back.  In many ways this may be my single best Hill, though it's so hard to choose.

After that little five-card spree I stand at 41 different Hill hits, the first of anyone in my PCs to break the 40 card barrier.  It also puts me at almost 500 cards amongst all four major sports, keeping in mind I have a couple more on the way and a whole COMC package to cover!  Finally, it puts me that much closer to my goal of 100 baseball hits, which shouldn't be a problem very soon.

Blowout/COMC/eBay Blowout 2012: Day 1

Happy Sunday, everyone!  It's been a great weekend of NFL playoffs with more action on the way this afternoon.  A quick note for those interested, these former Wolverines remain on teams alive in the playoffs (as of before Sunday's games):

• 49ers:  Jonathan Goodwin (also coached by Jim Harbaugh)
• Giants:  David Baas, Mario Manningham
• Packers:  Charles Woodson
• Patriots:  Tom Brady, Zoltan Mesko
• Ravens:  None
• Texans:  Tim Jamison

I'm pulling against the Giants because, honestly, who likes Eli Manning, or any Manning for that matter?  And obviously I hope the Ravens die a quick death for their anti-Michigan roster.  Now that Woodson picked up his ring last year, I'm 100% for the Patriots this year, and if they can't pull it off, I'd be fine with a Green Bay repeat, with a 49ers title in Harbaugh's first year a close third.  Go Blue in the NFL!

Now, onto card-related matters.  Those of you who are my more devoted readers might remember that around this time a year ago I was just finishing up a series of posts covering a plethora of cards I had picked up mainly via the Blowoutcards forums.  They were some of my most popular posts, and for some reason, day 2 remains my #4 most-read post of all time.

Well I have some good news for those of you that enjoyed last year's feature:  I've made a similar group of purchases, this time not only via Blowout, but also from COMC and eBay.  I'm happy to say that this year's haul should live up to last year's, and maybe even then some.  So over the next week or two, stay tuned for a blowout of Michigan-themed goodness courtesy of those three sites (not to mention eBay bucks and some Christmas money!).

Day 1 brought me cards from my all-time favorite Blowout seller, mdskyhawks.  This was my 6th purchase from the guy and I've been very satisfied each time.  I should even note that this order was missing one card--a Steve Hutchinson jersey--because he accidentally swapped in a Shaun Alexander relic, but he's already sent out the correct card and told me to keep the Alexander, which is excellent customer service.  He's always been easy to work with, his prices are excellent and his inventory is huge, plus his shipments always get to me quickly, so if you buy via Blowout, make sure to check him and his massive Buckets out!

So what did his latest package add to my PC?  Besides a bit of trade bait for a couple other bloggers, who should see those cards very soon, I nabbed these for myself:

Alan Branch 2007 UD Premier Premier Penmanship auto:  My 11th Alan Branch (all autos!) is this one, #ed 11/99 from one of UD's higher-end sets.  Interesting sidenote:  I have three multiplayer autos on which Branch is included.

Brandon Graham 2010 Crown Royale auto RC:  Brandon Graham #9 (8 autographs and a plate) is from the spiffy looking 2010 Crown Royale set.  I wish the sticker was more transparent, but the crown die-cut design looks great.  This is #d 150/249.

Braylon Edwards 2007 Upper Deck Artifacts Photoshoot Flashback Fabrics dual jersey:  I don't think Braylon EVER smiles for his pictures, and it's even funnier that he just has his rookie photo shoot jersey draped over his shoulder like he just doesn't care.  #d 030/350, (right in the middle, it's difficult to see, even in-person) this is my 34th Braylon, tying him for 2nd with the guy you'll see next.

Chad Henne 2008 Leaf Certified Materials Rookie Fabric of the Game jersey

Chad Henne 2008 Stadium Club Beam Team jersey:  This pair of Henne jerseys puts Chad, along with Braylon, at a very respectable 34, one behind currently leader Jake Long.  The Certified jersey is #ed 098/250 while the Stadium Club is unnumbered.  Between the two I still prefer the latter, though, because I really miss the always outstanding Stadium Club.  Topps puts out about 5,000 sets every year, yet they have to kill one of the few that's actually good....

Gabe Watson 2006 Select Inscriptions auto RC:  My fourth card of Big Gabe Watson is also my fourth auto/RC, and come to think of it, all of them are pretty shiny like this one, which is #ed 169/200.

Jake Long 2008 SPx Rookie Winning Materials triple jersey:  Yep, I always say it's not a purchase/trade package without something of Jake Long--had this one not included this very card, I'd have a three-way tie for first place in the PC!  I've never exactly been in love with some of the lesser versions of this Winning Materials set because the ones with a single relic on them end up looking pretty dumb.  A triple relic #d 03/75 is just fine in my book, though, so Long continues his death grip on first place with his 35th addition to the PC.
 

Shawn Crable 2008 Threads auto RC:  Finally, we end things today with just my 3rd Shawn Crable (all autographs in this case, too, which is cool).  #ed 265/299, this auto/RC ties in well with the Pats' victory over Tebow of Nazareth and his Broncos this weekend, even if Crable is no longer with New England.

The damage for these nine cards, plus the still-to-come Hutchinson jersey, (and the accidentally-sent Shaun Alexander, which I get to keep) plus a card that's already been shipped elsewhere, was a ridiculous $26 shipped.  That's why this seller is still my favorite on Blowout, and why I'll keep buying from him time after time.
