1-2-16 card show report: new year blues

As I said over on TMV this evening, I hit up the monthly show last Saturday, and while I didn't spend as much as I usually do I did find a few fun things for myself and others.  Here's the Wolverines stuff I nabbed:
Bernard Robinson 2004 SAGE Autographs Silver auto (#122/330)
This is a rare basketball card pickup that's not coming from a trade package since I don't usually buy them myself.  I couldn't say no to a buck for a Michigan uni autograph, though!  This is my fifth hit (all autos) of Robinson and second college uniform card in my basketball PC.

Next, this sextet of football guys came from the cheapie boxes:
Biakabutuka is a Sprint phone card.  Remember phone cards, fellow 90s kids?  Remember Pogs?!  Definitely a fun pickup of a great 90s player.  Griese's card is the hobby version of Pacific's crazy 2001 Invincible set.  The other four are additions to my football inserts collection.  From 2011 UD College Legends comes a card showing off AC helping Michigan beat UW to win the '81 Rose Bowl. Chad Henne looks sharp in his original pro uniform, though of course I like the college versions better!  Shoelace's card is an Extra Points Blue parallel of his 2013 Prestige RC (so called because "Extra Points" is done in hard-to-notice blue foil).  And LaMarr Woodley was a big-time playmaker indeed both in the pros and as shown with the Wolverines.

Last up on the day is my lone football hit:
Amani Toomer 2002 Score Franchise Fabrics jersey
I hadn't actually ever seen a card from this relic set before so I was surprised to find this Toomer for just a buck.  As is typical of Score products I like the design here, which focuses heavily on the red and blue of New York's uniforms.  Better yet, the back includes a photo of the jersey the swatch was taken from--worn "in an official NFL game"!  Imagine that, a game-worn jersey.  Boy the early 00s were a crazy time.  Anyway, this is my 17th Toomer hit, and maybe I'll be able to get him up to 20 and beyond this year.

That's it for this month but I'm sure I'll be back there in a few more weeks looking for more good stuff.  Until then, hopefully I'll finally get to posting most of my COMC loot from late last year!

2013 trade package #23: Canadian Thanksgiving from SCFtDS

So guess who sent me yet another trade package for the TENTH time this year?  Yep, Doug from SCFtDS.  This is my twelfth package from him, and the first one arrived about a year ago, so that's an average of a package-per-month!  Here's a look at what the hoser from looney-land sent this time:
Not much filler this time, but a cool quartet added some nice value.  The top two add to my growing number of CFL Wolverines--Hayes was an excellent title-winning WR and Pullen, a nice vintage add, was the first Canadian to earn a full ride and letter at Michigan, so Go Blue, eh?  I always love learning more about my favorite teams from cards.
Meanwhile, in the world of other sports, Doug gave me a taste of what was to come in the rest of the package in the form of a Jalen Rose base and a Jack Johnson sticker.

And now for the best part of every package he sends, the hits:
Bernard Robinson 2004-05 Bowman Signs of the Future auto
Bernard Robinson 2005-06 Upper Deck Rookie Debut Ink auto
Jalen Rose 2005-06 Upper Deck Hardcourt Materials jersey
From basketball I was treated to a pair of Bernard Robinson autos, one of which features him in a Michigan uni and is therefore my favorite of the four hits of him I now own.  Meanwhile, the Rose, if you can believe it, is my first hit of the former Fab-Fiver.  Besides meaning that I should step up and score hits of the other two (Jimmy King and Ray Jackson), Rose becomes the 10th unique player in my basketball PC, which, considering my apathy towards the sport, is a nice milestone to celebrate!

Chris Perry 2004 Leaf Rookies and Stars Initial Steps shoe (#044/100)
The only football hit in the bunch was a pretty cool one, a piece of "event-worn" shoe of former stud RB Chris Perry.  Shoe pieces don't get a whole lot of hobby love, and that's pretty obvious to me as only five of my 750+ football hits feature some sort of piece of footwear.  Anyway, that's a unique kind of hit, not to mention my 32nd Perry!

Jack Johnson 2010-11 Artifacts Jerseys Bronze dual jersey (#084/150)
Marty Turco 2001-02 UD Top Shelf jersey
Marty Turco 2002-03 Upper Deck Mask Collection Men Behind the Masks jersey
Marty Turco 2005-06 Upper Deck Jerseys Series II jersey
Marty Turco 2005-06 Upper Deck Trilogy Honorary Swatches jersey
Oh yeah, hockey, they like that game up north.  Well so do we down here in Ann Arbor, where Michigan's team is ranked 3rd in the nation.  The UM icers actually head down to Columbus tonight to try to avenge the football team with a home-and-home sweep of the Buckeyes.

Doug's done a lot for my hockey PC, including sending me several Jack Johnsons, such as the sweet dual jersey above, my seventh overall hit of JMFJ.  But better yet, he took the race between my top two hockey PC subjects to a whole new level, flipping me four Marty Turco jerseys to put the all-time great Michigan goalie back at the top with 21 hits (another fun milestone), while Brendan Morrison settles for second place with 18.  There's always next time, B-Mo!  Meanwhile, those are some gorgeous Dallas green swatches.

Thanks as always for the great trade, Doug, and may 2014 see another package-per-month pace for each of us.  Readers, save some Cyber Monday cash to spend at Sports Cards From the Dollar Store tonight!

Trade with Dennis, part 1.

Every time I trade with Dennis, he goes above and beyond.  I don’t know how each package I get from him ends up being better than the last.  He has high standards for the next trade, I can tell you that much.  Although in order for me to get the right cards to match what he sent me, it may be awhile before he has to come up with anything else.  Maybe he just likes to send me awesome cards because some of them go on his blog.  Who am I to complain though, if you got anything you want me to show here, Dennis, go ahead and send them to me.  You should send me all the cards you have in Michigan uniforms, you know, just so I can show them again on your blog.  Go ahead, you know the address.  Until then, let me show you some of this awesome package I received.

Bernard Robinson – 2004-2005 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects autograph

My collection seriously lacks the other sports other than football.  I do have a few now of basketball.  I want to say this is my 4th basketball auto, and my 2nd of Bernard Robinson, but that’s without looking.  It may be more, it may be less, but that’s what I remember.

I need to work on my basketball autos, I know I want to get Zack Novack’s and Stu Douglass’ as they are the lone senior starters on this years team.  And after that disappointing finish to our basketball program after the exciting year we had, I can at least look forward to those.  I don’t follow basketball cards enough to know when those kinds of sets will get released so I’ll just have to search every so often.  But I definitely appreciate this addition to the basketball auto’s.

Leon Hall – 2007 Sage Aspire autograph

Great action shot of the former CB.  Even though I need more basketball autographs, I’m certainly not turning down any football auto’s, especially from players I remember watching.

Donovan Warren – 2010 Press Pass Authentics Sideline Signatures autograph

Again, never going to turn down autographs of players I remember watching.  Especially with on card autographs.  I’m a long way from my autograph collection catching up with Dennis’ but I like the way it’s heading.

Steve Breaston – 2007 Topps Draft Picks & Prospects autograph

I loved Steve Breaston when he played with us.  He was a great receiver but he was more valuable to us as a return man.  He was exciting to watch when the ball was kicked to him.

And he had an awesome Rose Bowl game in 2005 where he had 315 all-purpose yards.  Which was the last time we’ve seen the Wolverines in the Rose Bowl game.  We lost that one by 1 point to the Texas Longhorns.  But not because of Breaston, he had a career game.

Anthony Carter – 2008 Press Pass Authentics Top 25 autograph #’d 112/155

I was drooling over the Anthony Carter cards when Dennis showed them a few days ago.  I even remember being jealous.  There was a Wolverine autograph that I had to have.  One of the all-time greats to wear #1. Then I get this.  An on card autograph and he signed his number underneath.  Are you freaking kidding me, this card is in my collection now?  I can’t thank Dennis enough for this card.  I don’t really know what to say.  Like I said at the top of the post, he’s going to have a hard time topping this trade.  I’m going to have a hard time return the gratitude.

I’ll be back in a day or 2 to finish off the Michigan portion of the trade from Dennis.  With a couple of the cards he sent me, I will be starting a new collection as well.  So stick around for that announcement as well as the more great stuff Dennis has coming.  He also sent me a huge stack of great stuff for my other collections but you’ll have to see those over at My Sports Obsession over the next few weeks..

STAY TRUE TO THE MAIZE AND BLUE!!!

Check out my blowout: day 1: basketball

It's time for another marathon of posts thanks to my second big COMC purchase of the year.  A good chunk of the cards went to Jeff, and I know he'll be dying to show off the Michigan stuff here before long, but I'm kicking things off today with basketball in honor of Michigan's shared Big Ten title and excellent overall season.

Bernard Robinson 2004-05 Upper Deck Black Diamond GemoGRAPHy auto:
Thanks to Jeff, this is my second Robinson auto.  I managed to pick up one for him with Bernard in a Michigan uni, but I decided to keep this one for myself so I had a couple of the guy.  He's now tied with two other players for the lead in my basketball PC. AT TWO.

Juwan Howard 2007-08 Upper Deck Game Jersey jersey:
Here's one of today's two new PC members, and he happens to be one of the Fab Five.  Remembering that team now that it's March Madness time is sort of bittersweet for those of us who are Michigan fans, but there's no denying this group was insanely talented and fun to watch.

Robert Traylor 2005-06 Upper Deck Hardcourt Signatures auto:
Traylor tragically passed away of a heart attack last May.  I guess as big a dude as he was (he wasn't nicknamed "Tractor" for nothin'), it wasn't a huge surprise, but that didn't make it any less devastating for Michigan fans.
This is a fairly nice card despite its simplicity and sticker auto, and I like that Traylor is sort of wearing some Wolverines-like maize, even if he's playing for an Ohio team.

That's all the basketball I picked up, but don't worry--there's PLENTY more from the other three major sports, especially football, of course.  I'm going to go a different route and actually spread these out a bit so my posts don't get too long and unreadable (plus labor-intensive for me) and so I have more to continue posting on in the next couple weeks.  Stay tuned for those posts, and definitely for Jeff's pickups as well, plus more thoughts on Michigan's hockey and basketball playoff runs.  LET'S GO BLUE!

Michigan basketball

Just a quick post.  I’m typing this as I watch the end of the Illinois vs. Michigan game.  I’ll probably post it later tonight since Dennis just put a post up about his first contest here at TMM.  I love watching our Wolverine basketball team when they play at home.  They are undefeated at home, and if they played in visitors arenas as well as they do at home they would be damn near undefeated overall.

We’ve had some great play off the bench, which we haven’t had since they put Stu Douglas in the starting line-up a week or so ago.

Hardaway has been hitting some shots, which he hasn’t done nearly all season.
Zack Novak
And you can’t forget about the heart of this team, Zach Novak.  He just plays all aspects of the game with passion and toughness.
Trey Burke just gets better and better every game.  I think he’s the difference in our team this year.  He has had an already impressive Freshman year.  I can’t wait to see him playing the NCAA tourney when everybody steps up their games.  It’s definitely an exciting time for Michigan basketball.
I’ve watched most of the games this year, which is the first time I’ve really watched any college basketball in a very long time.  Maybe even since the fab 5 years.  I watch a little bit come tourney time, but never full games.  But as much as I love watching them this year, a very small part of me can’t wait until they are no longer at Michigan just so they can sign some cards in their Michigan uniforms for my collection.
And speaking of Michigan basketball, I got my last package from ebay sometime last week.  I’ve already sent out most of those packages to Dennis yesterday, hopefully he’ll be happy with what I got him.  Most of it was Wolverines so you should see them here when he gets them posted.  I also received one more card for my collection in that package.
ebay04
Bernard Robinson Sage autograph.  I have very few Michigan basketball cards so this was a welcome addition.  Especially at the $1.98/shipped price I paid with combined shipping on the other items.
Be sure to check out the 1st contest here, at TMM.  All it takes is a comment to win some great autos, relics and rookies.  And he’ll even throw in some extra cards of your favorite team.  And if you know Dennis lately, extra cards means EXTRA cards.  Not saying he’ll ship you a whole box of cards, but it wouldn’t be the first time.
