2018 trade package #12: Sports Cards From the Dollar Store

The theme of this trade package from Doug of Sports Cards From the Dollar Store is "insane".  As it's insane that he's sent me 53 envelopes (and counting) that I've posted on this here blog, packages filled with a crazy number of cards that have filled sets and player collections.  What was so nuts about the latest one that arrived recently?

Let's start with the insane design on this 2017-18 Spectra Neon Green parallel (#19/49) of Chris Webber.  Not only is it the cardboard version of LSD, it also gave me a flashback to Upper Deck's HoloGrFx.  That's UD hallucinations in both posts tonight!

Former Michigan DE Frank Clark had freakish talent and put up some great numbers in college.  But Clark, pictured here on a 2018 Donruss base card, was insane to think he'd get away with doing and saying some terrible things towards women, behavior totally unfit for any human being, much less a Michigan Man.

The quantity and quality of the hockey content Doug's sent me over 50+ packages is insane, and at some point maybe I'll even go through each post and total it up to try to put a number on it.  But for now I'll happily enjoy more of the fruits of his bread-and-butter repacks.

This time that includes lots of this year's OPC (more in the next scan) such as stalwarts Mike Cammalleri and Carl Hagelin plus young gun JT Compher.  The latter is joined by fellow up-and-comers Zach Hyman and WolverWing Dylan Larkin from the last UD MVP offering.  As I said on TMV tonight that's my 20th Larkin card, a fun little milestone I'm celebrating.  New Penguins D-man Jack Johnson dominates this scan with a cool trio, and better-than-that-announcer-guy John Madden closes out the group.

Like I said, plenty of 2018-19 OPC, which was a nice boon to my collection this time.  Motte and Werenski have each only been around for a couple seasons while Trouba's a vet at this point and Patch is going into his 11th campaign, now as a member of the Knights.  It's crazy for me to realize that Pacioretty, seen here on another nice trio--has been in the NHL for more than a decade!

And at last we get to the craziest card of them all, a true 1/1 of WolverWing Luke Glendening from 2013-14 Panini Rookie Anthology's Prizm portion.  Doug continued his insane luck when it comes to breaking boxes (of this product and in general), and was also crazy generous in letting me have this Prizms Finite parallel as one of several super high-end cards he's sent my way.  Did I mention it's a true 1/1, as in not one in a set of four plates or something?  Simply amazing, and a great card to add to my small collection of Glendening (it joins an auto I bought and a relic Doug sent) and surprisingly large group of 1/1s (111).

I can't help but love the blurb on the back that highlights Luke getting to play hockey in-state at college, in the minors, and the NHL as well.

Doug, you are a crazy man with insane luck and I will do my damndest to pay you back with something (or -things) that equal or exceed the generosity you continue to send across the border.  Thank you, my Canadian buddy!

2016 trade package #8: Sports Cards Ate My Free Time

Welcome to the TMM portion of the great (in size and quality) trade package from Scott over at Sports Cards Ate My Brain.  If you haven't gone into a card coma yet, well, congratulations.  Scott sent me so much great stuff I didn't think I'd ever get it all scanned, and really I still haven't since I still need to get things labelled and such before putting them in my various PC albums.  That's exactly the type of complaint I like to have!

You saw Michigan star Barry Larkin over on TMV among the other players, and here you can take a gander at the rest of the Wolverines Mr. Sawyer so generously sent:

Here's a quartet of Jim Abbotts, led by an oddball Post card, which is followed by three more logo-less cards from Tri-Star Obak and UD Goodwin Champions.  All are new for me, so the unanimous verdict is:  awesome!

With a solitary hockey card and just a few from basketball I combined these sports into one scan.  I flat out loved the late 90s/early 2000s Black Diamond product and its colorful numbered parallels, and really how could I say no this shiny red gem of one of my favorites, Brendan Morrison?  He's joined by a pair of Cazzies, vintage and modern (Michigan uni!), a numbered C-Webb, and a couple recent RCs of "Sauce Castillo" and Mitch McGary.  Nicely done!

I rag on recent Topps stuff but it wasn't always the dreck it is today--witness this gorgeous relic card of basketball favorite Glen Rice from 2000-01 Gold Label.  Rice won an NBA ring that year to go with his NCAA title, and that was commemorated on this beauty of a jersey card with a nice Lakers purple swatch to go with the abundant gold around it.

Ok, we've covered the other three sports, so on to football!  Here are some inserts (and one base) of four excellent Wolverines, three of which appear in full Michigan regalia.  I love any new Woodson, and his Contenders card looks fantastic, but I can't help but give the crown to Wheatley's awesome photo with the back flying through the air as a male cheerleader looks on intently.

Here were some of the biggest surprises of this package:  vintage football!  Nunley, Rowser, and Seal all appeared in my recent Rookie Blue/-Out posts (which I hadn't posted when Scott sent them) while the remainders are guys I showed off but appearing on cards I most certainly didn't have.  I'm looking forward to adding these to my growing album of older issues of Wolverines in the pros!

Last up was a surprise pair of SAGE autos from back when that set wasn't forced to feature dull photos.  Number one was former Lions first-round tackle Jeff Backus, whom Detroit selected one pick after Seattle chose future HOF guard Steve Hutchinson, 15 years ago.  This one is numbered 658/900 and doubles my Backus hit total to two.

Aw yeah, new Hart auto!  At first I thought I already had this one, but as it's the "Non-numbered" version I most certainly did not.  It's another example of a SAGE design I can appreciate, especially thanks to the nice home game action photo.  It's my 61st hit of Hart, which is simply amazing.

Scott, I'm forever in your debt for all of this amazing stuff I was able to show off on two different blogs, and I still hope to return the favor somewhat, whether you like it or not.  Thanks for all these great PC additions!

2015 trade package #27: Canadian Christmas Cards!

It may just about be the end of the year but I've still got 2015 trade packages coming in!  The title of this post means tonight's envelope could only be from Doug at Sports Cards From the Dollar Store, who's managed to send me six of the last seven packages(!) I've posted over here, and 13 overall on the year.  If you're counting at home, this is the 34th time I've posted cards from my hoseriffic buddy, and I already can't wait to see what 2016 brings (plus what he thinks of the latest package I sent his way).

This time I received a nicely stuffed PWE that was filled with these cards:

Hill is back to being relevant thanks to his resurgent 2015 so I hope he'll be appearing on more cardboard next year!

Here's some guys who starred for the Maize and Blue on the court, including Burke and McGary who did so recently.  I really like the simplicity of the Hoops design this year.

Also out of basketball comes this colorful Chris Webber Kings jersey relic.  The cool outlining Fleer did here makes Chris look like he came straight out of a comic book!

The football portion was a bit smaller but was still top-notch.  Brady is from this year's Black Friday set, Griese is out of the 2001 Heritage Retrofractor (not Chrome?) parallel offering and is numbered of 556, and Des's Classic card is "One of only 40,000"!

Here's a couple oddballs to add to my Red Berenson PC.  On the left is a 1991-92 Future Trends Canada '72 French issue, and the photo is amazing, especially with one player having been bowled over on the right edge.  The other is a much tinier, paper-thin offering from the 1970-71 Esso Power Players set.  Very cool!

And we'll end things today with--what else?--hockey!  Jack "MF" Johnson and a colorful A-A-Ron Palushaj bookend a pair of Patch offerings, one from last year's Masterpieces and the other from this year's UD set.  Rounding things out is a 2008-09 Panini sticker of blog favorite goalie Marty Turco.

Thanks for the fun PWE which I'm happy to report arrived on Christmas Eve, Doug!  Here's to a happy new year of trading between you and I, plus all the other great folks in the Cardsphere!
